JG-HOST: Garcia hosting other musicians

Have at it. You will see some ambiguities around guest vs. membership. I am happy to receive any thoughts or comments you might have.

Thanks for this. Here are a few additions for 1974.

    1974-01-18 JGMS Keystone, Berkeley
Geoff Muldaur sings CC Rider and Tennessee Blues (broadcast on Grateful Dead Hour 1479, this has a different verse after Jerry's solo to the Tennessee Blues from 1974-02-10)

    1974-01-19 JGMS Pauley Ballroom, Berkeley
Matt Kelley plays harp on Finders Keepers and How Sweet It Is (on Shnid 8064)

    1974-02-05 JGMS GAMH, SF
unknown second sax player in addition to Fierro on second set (on Shnid 32088, eg you can hear two saxes riffing behind Jerry's solo 11 minutes into Think)

1974-04-28 OITW Bluegrass Fest, San Rafael
unknown harp player on Hobo Song encore

1974-06-13 GASB (if you count Jerry as a host) Keystone, Berkeley
Bob Gurland (that's what it sounds like anyway) cornet on Bud's Bounce, Virgin's Lament, Swing 42 and Sweet Georgia Brown

    1974-08-15 JGMS GAMH, SF
unknown trumpet in addition to Fierro's sax on Road Runner (Shnid 116253, he takes a solo from 5:25)

    You're welcome, here's some more for 1973

    1973-03-07 JGMS Keystone, Berkeley
Sarah Fulcher and George Tickner (on Shnid 31501)

1973-05-04 JGMS Homer's Warehouse, Palo Alto
Sarah Fulcher and George Tickner (on Shnid 31283)

1973-05-05 JGMS Homer's Warehouse, Palo Alto
Sarah Fulcher and George Tickner (on Shnid 32030)

1973-07-?? poss 7th JGMS Keystone, Berkeley (on Merl's "Keepers")
Kenneth Nash congas on I Was Made To Love Her. The liner notes describe this as an out-take from "Live At Keystone" recorded by Betty and Rex in July but it did not appear on the later "Complete" release or the tapes we have for 10 and 11 July so I suspect it is from 1973-07-07. It is possible Nash was overdubbed after the fact given the amount of overdubs on this cd, I don't have much faith in the liner info.

    1973-10-05 OITW Santa Cruz
Ramblin' Jack yodels Waiting For A Train according to
    http://cryptdev.blogspot.com/2012/06/jerry-garcia-and-his-banjo-in-santa.html

Finally, is it confirmed that Atwood is the trumpeter on 1973-10-02? As opposed to Joe Ellis say.

Nothing to add at the moment, but glad to see this up!

re 6/13/74, Bob Gurland really did play "mouth trumpet": it's him making a trumpet sound with his mouth, rather than an actual horn. Youtube him.

and thanks for the note about 1/18/74! The aud tape has CC Rider and then you can hear Jerry suggesting Tennessee Blues before the cut — but I had no idea the sbd was broadcast on the GDH!

10/8/68 Hartbeats with Jack Casady, Elvin Bishop
10/10/68 Hartbeats with Marvin (Gardens?) on harmonica
    10/30/68 Hartbeats with Elvin Bishop
(you're counting 8/28/69 so might as well count these too?)

??/70 per drummer George Marsh: “So one of those times, it was set up that Mel Graves, the bassist, and myself and Merl Saunders played with Jerry one of the nights at the Matrix.”
    https://www.pastemagazine.com/blogs/lists/2012/08/five-musicians-remember-jerry-garcia.html

3/14/74 – EW Wainright on drums (written in Rex's handwriting on the tape box), per you. I am less certain about Wainwright's presence on 3/9/74 which may be inferential rather than hard evidence (again, per you) — to my ears, the drummer on 3/9 doesn't sound noticeably different from Kreutzmann.

6/6/74 – Tony Saunders. Jerry audibly says "let's do that, Tony" before they play Darben the Redd Foxx.

7/12/74 – no audible guest guitarist, just mandolin. Grisman is a distinct possibility but uncertain (unless you know something I don't) per me, I guess: http://deadthinking.blogspot.com/2018/01/71274-mystery-mandolin.html

10/4,5,6/74 – Jim Nelson on drums. per you.

10/27/74 – I still think the "Ringo" thing is spurious. There is no audible evidence as far as I can tell that anyone is sitting in on drums for Maria's guest spot. http://deadthinking.blogspot.com/2019/08/102774-stay-golden-jerry.html

6/3,4/75 – unknown drummer, not Ron Tutt (as per MOTB text files)

6/8/75 – unknown drummer, not Ron Tutt, prob not Paul Humphrey. see http://hooterollin.blogspot.com/2011/09/paul-humphrey-drums.html?showComment=1315056582981#c4977734096737311451

6/22/75 – Greg Errico, as per you: http://jgmf.blogspot.com/2011/12/ln-jg1975-06-22lomallaud-menke-falanga.html

12/17/75 – confirmation: this is definitely Greg Errico on drums. Nicky introduces him ("Enrico").

12/31/75 – with Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, Matt Kelly, Greg Errico

3/22/78 – Ozzie Ahlers sits in for Keith, per the official release.

    10/24/78 – with Lee Oskar

1/22/83 – Mickey Hart? Some of the text files mention him but I hear no additional percussion or any indication of a guest during this show. To be fair, the tape is a sbd, so it's possible he was there but not properly mic'ed? I am skeptical, though.

Anyone have any thoughts as to whether Sarah should be considered a guest or a member? I know it requires a deeply subjective, quite arbitrary judgment, so just curious.

I would count her as a short term member, George Tickner and Armando Peraza the same. They played runs of shows as opposed to scattered appearances. But it's good to see them identfied here whatever the classification.

  8. Nick Avatar

correction: Clarence Clemons does not play on 9/5/89 Hartford. He played every show that tour from 9/7 through 9/16.

  9. Nick Avatar

and Clarence Clemons does not play on 12/1/89 Warfield, despite what the txt file for shnid=6348 says. He did play on 12/2, but not 12/1.

As you are counting Armando Peraza as a guest for the February 1972 shows what about March? He was included in the listings for Jerry and Merl in "Night Times" as you illustrated in

    https://jgmf.blogspot.com/2014/08/jerry-and-freddie-mid-march-1972.html

Is there a reason to think he did not appear?

  11. Fate Music Avatar

No, I just haven't been systematic in coding these things, which is one of the reasons posting this is so helpful!

  12. runonguinness Avatar

ok, thanks. The one appearance I forgot to mention is the mysterious "Bev" female vocalist at the uncirculated NRPS 1970-7-7 Matrix show. Not that I've ever been able to hear it.

Jack Casady also played with the Hartbeats on 10/10/68 according to the OTDIDH files.
