19690801 Family
Dog On The Great Highway
San
Francisco
CA GD August
1 was the night the Light Artists’ Guild, led by Jerry Abrams, struck the
Family Dog. Garcia would not cross the picket line and had scheduled a
proto-New Riders gig at UC Berkeley, presumably to avoid the hassles. He
didn’t quite escape them. Eyewitness reports say Bob Weir and Bill
Kreutzmann, at least, broke the picket line and played, along with two
flautists and a conguero. I am not sure about Phil Lesh, Tom Constanten, or
Ron McKernan. It is possible that this could be considered as a Grateful Dead
show without Jerry Garcia, as far as I know a singular occurrence in the
30-year history of that band.

19691004 Lake
Amador
CA “Gold Rush is on – 24 hours of rock-folk-blues on the shores of Lake
Amador, a private lake resort miles from anything. ” Scheduled for
October 4th, planned acts include Ike and Tina Turner, Sons of Champlin, Taj
Mahal, Grateful Dead, John Fahey, Cold Blood, Albert Collins, Linn County, Al
Wilson, Country Weather, Daybreak, Kaleidoscope and Southwind. Things look to
have been pretty far advanced, with lots of buy-in from various hip community
forces, including the Tribe. Since the Dead played Boston that night, they
certainly weren’t there. Did the event happen? Either way, I’ll call it a
canceled Dead gig.

by Mike Lawson, the after-hours thing at Fantasy Studios happened after an
Old & In the Way gig in Berkeley. I am highly dubious of this, or the
idea that Jerry played any bluegrass in Berkeley on this night. For the
record, Earthquake and Stoneground were billed for Keystone this night. I am
sure Freddie would have been willing to bump these East Bay locals for Garcia
on a Saturday, but OAITW was no longer a going concern. I find it much more
likely that JGMS played than that OAITW did

MA JGB Canceled.
I wonder if this was fallout from the problems on the Boardwalk two nights
previously? Be great to ask John Scher about these shows. Unknown paper has a
picture of the likely looking Poussette-Dart Band, captioned as openers for
JGB at Cape Cod Coliseum, July 10th. The ad in the Real Paper shows that this
was a Don Law production at Cape Cod. I need to learn more about Law and
Boston. Anyway, here’s the text: “Jerry Garcia Band Concert at Cape Cod
Coliseum cancelled. Tickets will be refunded at point of purchase.” NB
this show is not on the band itinerary!

I hitchhiked from Maine with my brother to the July 10, 1977 JGB show in Cape Cod, When we arrived there was nobody there, no sign. Nothing. We talked to one guy near by who said the show was cancelled. Then we hitchhiked home the 150+ miles to Maine. My comment to Dead Relic on this was published as a letter that Fall. Formatting aside, it's great that this list is available now. I'll dig around in my notes and see if other canceled shows turn up.

Thank you. Let me try to post a PDF and see if commenting via Google Docs cam become "a thing", as the kids would say, in our informational networks.

I hope it gets used and cited! I should put a "preferred citation" note on it.

Rob Berger post to LL, 12/24/2010 11:40:22

"In 1981 a buddy and I went down to TX for shows and the first two were canceled: Will Rogers Memorial Auditorium, Fort Worth, TX. I forget if they were booked for 6/29-30 or 6/30-7/1..(anybody remember?) With an intimate 2800 capacity, we north easterners were excited to see the boys in such a small place for two nights. When we arrived in town there were a couple of hundred heads milling about and we learned that the shows were canceled. The word in the lot was that Brent od'd.
Anyhow, I never see these dates listed in canceled shows. Anybody else out there spend a couple of days in '81 in the hot summer sun of Texas with nothing to do?"

I wish I had precise dates, I would add them.

  5. Fate Music Avatar

That's 6/30/81 and 7/1/81, via a correspondent, who calls it Will Rogers Coliseum.

Same correspondent supplies 19811127 Friday Orange Bowl Orlando FL GD Allman Brothers Band, which I have added to my spreadsheets.

Correspondent recalls given reason as low ticket sales.

  6. Light Into Ashes Avatar

How times change… In 1973 the Dead and Allmans played the biggest show in the land. In 1981 they couldn't sell enough tickets to put on one stadium show. Maybe it was the location…

  7. Fate Music Avatar

LIA, good angle! I just came across this, looks like BAM:

"Allmans- Grateful Dead twin bill canceled": Nine years ago, the Allman Brothers Band and the Grateful Dead teamed up for the Watkins Glen Summer Jam in upstate New York and drew 600,000 fans-the largest crowd in rock history. But a show with those same two groups, scheduled for November 27th at the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando, Florida, was canceled ten days before the event with fewer than 10,000 of the 60,000 available tickets sold. The reason? The Rolling Stones and their late-October dates at the Tangerine Bowl.
According to a spokesman for the Allmans and the Dead, the Stones apparently had scooped so much of the available money out of the market that concertgoers just couldn't afford the $12.50 price tag for the concert, and rather than risk an embarrassingly small turnout, the promoters decided to cancel the show. At press time, there were no plans to reschedule the concert.

    So, right, Tangerine Bowl.

  8. Fate Music Avatar

Yeah, it was actually the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando – see above.

  9. Jerry's Brokendown Palaces Avatar

It WAS in Miami. The Orange Bowl was demolished in May 2008.

  10. Fate Music Avatar

Holy moley, I used to drive past the Orange Bowl. Where does UM football play now?

  11. Light Into Ashes Avatar

Good to see more info. That's an odd explanation, though…does that sound typical? Looks like tickets for the Stones/Van Halen shows on October 24-25 were $15.50:
    http://www.rockshowvideos.com/rocksuperbowl12.html

I think if the same event had been scheduled in New York or someplace other than the south, it would have sold just fine; but that's conjecture.

  12. Light Into Ashes Avatar

I'm going to post a number of updates on the other canceled-gigs page linked as a "JGMF Essential," assuming that'll be the go-to page more people will look at (though this one's a little better visually) – but I wonder whether either page will be edited to reflect future additions, or just the attached PDF…?

BTW, John Scher was managing the Allman Brothers in late 1981.

Just found this regarding 6/30 & 7/1 Ft. Worth. I was doing an internship my junior year of college in Dallas and was so pscyhed. Had just seen them in Greensboro I was going to school at Duke. Then home after the semester caught a show at Nassau and 2 in New Haven. My parents live in Stamford. Then for those shows to be announced just after I got to Dallas and I got @10th row center seats.

Another show cancelled that I never knew about was June 15, 1973 at the University of Cincinnati outdoors Here is an ad from Indy Star June 10 and cancel article June 15 https://www.dropbox.com/s/40cudrf9pfvjnoe/6%203%20and%206%2010%201973%20Indy%20Star%20%20%20on%20Newspapers.com.png?dl=0 https://www.dropbox.com/s/z3motan3isk4ck8/Dead%20Canceled%206%2015%2073%20%20%20on%20Newspapers.com.png?dl=0

Weird, 5 minutes later in research, I find more info on the July 4, 1974 cancelled show. Clapton & Friends were to headline with the Dead and the Band in Columbus, Ohio see attached ad. ain't it crazy. Clapton did play Columbus on that date indoors at a different venue and The Band played Wentzville, MO

One other puzzling story also appeared in the Indianapolis Star on January 17, 1971. It speaks to a Grateful Dead concert at Yale that has already occured that replaced the Yale Prom. Of course there is the Yale Bowl show that will occur July 31, 1971 but I have seen no record of a Yale concert. Prom is in the Spring so Spring 70 saw 5-14 in Missouri, the band rushed to NYC for 5-15, Philly 5-16 and Fairfield University in Connecticut 5-17 before back in Missouri 5-19. With Lost Live Dead unclear about May 17, this is another interest Dead tidbit from that Bermuda Triangle newspaper The Indianapolis Star https://www.dropbox.com/s/yro8b841v39ps1y/Indianapolis%20Star%201%2017%201971%20p87%20%20%20on%20Newspapers.com.png?dl=0

Never seen that one – thanks!

This is a weird one. Maybe thinking of Wesleyan on 5/3/70?

Yeah, this one was commented over on the other page. A shame I have two pages working … I'll see about closing this one from further comments.

Good find – but the article is talking about the prom to come, not the 1970 prom. The Dead were scheduled in place of the 1971 prom, but canceled – see the 3/5/71 entry here.

I did not see a listing for the cancelled show at Shoreline Amphitheatre in July of 1986? Here is the image of a GDTS note to Rock Scully displayed at Grateful Dead Archive Online:

I'm wondering if this is the opening show for the new Shoreline that had to be cancelled due to his coma???
    Cheers, MK

There was a show in Orlando with the Allman Brothers and outlaws in November 1979 that was cancelled.

Do we not count the fall '95 tour as cancelled? There were shows scheduled all the way until December of that year

Wasn't there a canceled show for JGB in San Diego 1983?

  31. Fate Music Avatar

Yes. I haven't updated this list in a while, since all of the canceled gigs are now listed at Jerrybase. But they tried to schedule gigs in La Jolla on 8/12 and 8/14, it seems, probably things got rearranged somewhere before the cancellation. Here is the relevant window: JGB 8/10/83-8/14/83
