These are “warts and all” … straight transfers of the source cassettes with editing only of the most offensive tape transitions and such. If you don’t like hiss, possible speed problems, etc., etc., then move along. And, to anticipate a FAQ: no, I don’t plan on doing 16/44s of these. Thanks to wk for supplying these tapes!

    Per a few posts ago, my original list has May 6 '83 at The Stone. So does Deadbase IX. It actually makes more sense that JGB played Berkeley on Friday (May 6) and the Stone on Saturday (May 7), but my original notes say The Stone, probably right off the Hotline.

    So somehow, in making the jump from Deadbase IX to TJS, or while resident at TJS, the data have been changed. TJS's entry for May 6, 1983 credits Walter Keenan and Fred Milward. Keenan's cassette is the tape annotated here, but hopefully a ticket stub or other artifact (even a concrete memory) will turn up.

    It's astounding the number of early 80s entries in The List that exist only by virtue of your hotline transcriptions and annotations. There are newspaper listings and ephemera and lots of other things, but there's less interest in digging that stuff out and documenting it. There's also the idea that this era falls into an archival gap … too new to be historically preserved in many cases, too unprofitable to warrant doing it (I have BAM in mind here, though I sure would wish there could be a way to do it.), and too new to have been published electronically (less still on the internet).

    What's the status of the Chronicle's electronic archives at this point in time?

    Keenan confirms, from well-anchored memory, that it was Keystone Berkeley on May 6th and the Stone in SF on May 7th.

    I've been thinking about the process side of this. The Keystone shows were May 6-7, and the national tour didn't start til a few weeks later. That means that I got the original dates from the newspaper, not the hotline. I always wrote down dates as soon as I saw them, so the Chronicle Pink Section Keystone ad must have said "coming May 6-7: Jerry Garcia Band," a few weeks prior to the show.

    Presumably, the ad implied or actually said that JGB would play The Stone, but I never pursued it to follow up and see that the May 6 show was actually Keystone Berkeley. I recall May '83, and my life wasn't Garcia-centric at the time.

    I would also note that its impossible to follow up Keystone Berkeley and Stone dates through ticket stubs, since there weren't any.

    Yeah, the ticket stub thing is a bane to historical research …

    It's good to get a sense of the process, and the temporal contours and variations relating to your own life.

    For the record, I am going with the Berkeley listing until further notice. This is primarily based on the following recollections, graciously sent along by and shared with the the permission of Walter Keenan:

    KEENAN:

    Yes I did attend. I thought both the 6th in Berkeley and 7th at the Stone were both excellent shows. They were warm ups for the Greeks the following week, which were, IMO, the best Greek run of them all.

    I do not have a ticket stub. At the Keystone you got in line and paid at the door and they stamped your hand …

    And further, when I prodded specifically about the city, Keenan specified as follows [edited for continuity]:

    KEENAN:
    [I am] positive the 6th was in Berkeley because my friend … and I slept in the park right behind the BCT that night. We slept in the park because the [JGB] show got out so late that BART had closed down. It was warm out so we just crashed in the park. The next morning got up and took BART into S.F. [to see the May 7th show at the Stone].

    BART closed? Check. Warm May night in Berkeley? Check. Nowhere particular to be until show time at the Stone? Check. Wanna sleep here? Check.

    We have spoken methodologically about the quality of memory as evidence, which varies radically from case to case. I love what I call "anchored" memories, ones that are attached in a little syndrome or complex … that's the good stuff. So, Berkeley it is.
