San Francisco Sessions, 1967-1968

updated title 20160319

San Francisco Sessions Series

In the course of my research into Jerry Garcia’s musical
life outside the Grateful Dead, I have gathered up, well, an awful lot of
stuff. Sometimes I can’t resist, especially if I find myself in amongst papers
that others might not get around to, but that might contain good information.
The following is just a rough list of some of the union
contracts I came across. You’ll see that this is biased toward names that I
know from the Side Trips Social Network – that has been my research purpose.
But sometimes there’s stuff that’s very peripheral that just catches my eye.
 I am trying not to
transcribe too much information, since it’s so peripheral to my interests. I am
putting it out here for other researchers who might be interested. The
documents of course contain all kinds of other information I am just listing
date/venue, artist/project/names, employer, and a six-digit number that will
help me find the document in question. If you are curious about a particular
document, drop me a line.

update: I have now posted a similar list for 1969.

This is great, if you are the sort of person who makes obsessive lists of San Francisco bands and their doings. Since I am pretty much the epitome of that sort of person, I couldn't be more thrilled. For me, it's particularly useful to find out the exact dates when various obscure SF albums were recorded (Shades Of Joy, Planned Obsolescence, and so on).

There are some intriguing "lost" items–even though I can't stand Dino Valente, it's pretty interesting to see an apparent (based on dates) live performance with Dino and some QMS members at The Committee Theatre (was there a drummer?).

And a live concert by Steve Miller Band at The Cheetah on July 26 '67, on what I believe was a Monday night, broadcast on KPFK? Should I ever actually get around to updating my Steve Miller lists (don't hold your breath), this would be good stuff.

Really, this is a great list, for the few dozen people who really worry about this sort of thing.

As I think you have established with your blogs, one of the nice things is just putting it all out there as Google-bait. It might sit here for years, unread, and someone will Google their wife/uncle/younger self and all kinds of things can shake loose.

Cool, Richard Greene in Stinson Beach five years before OAITW was formed. Wonder if Peter Rowan was already living there in '68. Was Grisman? I don't think Garcia was living there till 1971?

Even cooler is the fact that Jerry's Weymann banjo, known as "John", was sold to Lundberg Fretted Instruments by Peter Berg, an early member of the Redwood Canyon Ramblers, the Bay Area's first bluegrass band.
Jerry bought it from Jon Lundberg.

  4. Jerry's Brokendown Palaces Avatar

Ansering my own question here-Rowan and Grisman didn't move to Stinson Beach until October 1970. Jerry moved into San Souci in July 1971 so I guess they never played Richard Greene in Stinson Beach in 1968.

  5. Jerry's Brokendown Palaces Avatar

    Answering!
Garcia bought Sans Souci on May 31, 1971, according to the Marin County, Official Record, Book , APN 195-111-05.

Yes, I was going to say something like that, you beat me to it!

"Even cooler is the fact that Jerry's Weymann banjo, known as "John", was sold to Lundberg Fretted Instruments by Peter Berg, an early member of the Redwood Canyon Ramblers, the Bay Area's first bluegrass band."

I've been corrected. Peter Berg owned the non "John" Weymann. It was the Weymann 1926 Style 4 banjo, gold banded arch top. Very sorry.

Jerry bought it from Jon Lundberg.
